Planning A Bridal Shower

By Stephanie Elms

There are many traditions that come along with getting married.

Bridal Showers are just one of the many that the loving couple will experience in the weeks and months leading up to the nuptials. Showers are a time of celebration with family and friends, a time of fun and historical tradition. Historically speaking, the first bridal shower was thrown for a couple in Holland.

According to the legend, a young girl fell in love with a mill operator. Despite his charm he was very poor. This did not set well with the bride's father and in an attempt to discourage the union he refused to give the customary bridal dowry. Despite the fathers attempt at dissuasion, the bride continued with her planning despite any consequence. Her beau was apparently a very generous man, always helping others in the community. In an effort to show their appreciation, all of his close friends and family came together to "shower" the new couple with the many items they would need to start their life together.

So the beginning of the long standing tradition of the bridal shower and a enchanting story to share with your guests. Bridal showers are an opportunity for family and friends to show their support for the new couple. They should be fun, practical, and momentous.

Here are a few suggestions to ensure the next bridal shower you host will be a delightful occasion.

• First and foremost be creative and unique.

Remember the bride during your planning and work to incorporate her style and personality into your shower.

• Select a shower type.

There are many types of showers to host. In the past, most bridal showers focused on household items needed to equip the new couple for their life together. Today, many couples have most of what they need so they prefer to have a travel fund shower or a lingerie shower.

• Next, select a location. Showers can be very formal to informal. You may prefer a home, a restaurant, the beach, or a destination that starts the bachelorette party.

• Select a theme that embodies the spirit of the occasion and captures the personality of the bride and your guests. This can be done through the location, food, decorations, and any games or entertainment provided.

• Determine the date and time. Most bridal showers are traditionally given on Sunday, however; your schedule, along with the brides will be a big influence. Typically showers are done anywhere from 2 months to 2 weeks prior to the wedding.

• Prepare to send out invitations. Contact the bride to get an invitation list and also to find out where she is registered. Be creative with your invitations as they can set the stage for your theme. Often it is nice to show where the bride is registered on the invitation.

• Host the shower and enjoy the time together with family and friends!
